Los Angelesı premier art museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has struggled since its opening in 1965 to hold its own among the greatest art museums in the U.S.
Comprised of five separate buildings, the museum can seem ominous, even foreboding. Yet its permanent collection, which features Impressionist paintings from Paul Cezanne and Claude Monet as well as works from artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian, is welcoming. Ever popular is the museum's Pavilion for Japanese Art, where the spiraling levels display Japanese paintings, prints, sculpture, decorative arts and textiles.
With its many film, lecture and music programs, the museum serves as a community and cultural center. Free jazz concerts are performed every Friday from 5:30-8:30pm and chamber music is performed every Sunday at 6pm. Sundays also feature family programs inspired by the museumıs collection. Film series have recently included a tribute to director Blake Edwards.
In 1999, LACMA expanded westward to the former May Co. department store, noted for its art deco architecture. Named LACMA West, this annex also houses the museum's childrenıs gallery as well as the Southwest Museum (admission to the Southwest Museum is separate).
A new Welcome Center at the museumıs original location is currently under construction, which is set to feature an expanded passage to neighboring Hancock Park, a café and museum shop.
